What makes a great smoothie?

A great smoothie is all about balance: flavor, texture, and ingredients that blend smoothly together. I make smoothies all the time, and the best ones always have:

  • A frozen fruit base for thickness
  • A creamy liquid for smooth blending
  • One or two extras that enhance flavor and texture

This raspberry smoothie checks all the boxes. It doesn’t rely on bananas for sweetness, letting the raspberries shine instead, which gives it that fresh, slightly tart flavor that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Key Ingredients that Make This Smoothie:

Raspberries: It adda a vibrant color and a bold, slightly tangy flavor that balances beautifully with creamy ingredients. I love using frozen raspberries because they make the smoothie thicker and colder without watering it down. If you love raspberries, I think you’ll also love my raspberry chia pudding and my raspberry chocolate cake.

Avocado: It might sound unexpected, but it’s the secret to a creamy, velvety texture. It doesn’t overpower the flavor at all. It just makes the smoothie extra smooth. If you don’t have avocado on hand, almond butter works well as a substitute.

Coconut milk: Adds richness and a subtle sweetness that pairs perfectly with berries. You can also swap it for almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, or any milk you enjoy.

Protein powder (optional): If you like adding protein powder to your smoothies, choose one with a neutral flavor so it doesn’t overpower the raspberries. It also helps make the smoothie thicker and more filling.

How to make a raspberry smoothie thicker

If you love a thick, milkshake-style smoothie, try one (or more) of these tips:

  • Use frozen raspberries instead of fresh
  • Add a few ice cubes to the blender
  • Add an extra scoop of protein powder
  • Blend in Greek yogurt or vanilla yogurt for extra creaminess

All of these options help create a rich, spoon-able texture.

Fun add-ins to change it up

Once you have the base down, it’s easy to customize this smoothie. Try adding:

These small additions can completely change the flavor while keeping the smoothie just as easy to make.

Fresh vs frozen ingredients

Both fresh and frozen raspberries work, but frozen fruit makes this smoothie thicker and colder without adding ice. Frozen avocado is also a great option and saves time since there’s no waiting for it to ripen.

There’s no need to thaw anything, just toss everything straight into the blender.

Is there anything I could use instead of the avocado? Me and my body hates them

    1. Olivia Ribas says:

Bananas is great too, but it has way more sugar than an avocado.

Thanks for this recipe. I made a variation of it, but never would have thought to use avocado in a smoothie. So delicious. The variation I made was to not include the protein powder. And I used flaxseed milk instead of coconut milk. And added a tablespoon of MCT oil for the extra fat. Still this was freakin’ delicious. Thanks lady 🙂

I loved the Raspberry smoothie, my avacodo wasn’t ripe, so I used spinach instead. I also used almonds in place of the protein powder. I haven’t been able to get any yet. But, I really loved ❤️ it. Thank you
