If you’ve spent any time here at Primavera Kitchen, you know how much I love Sweet Potato Recipes! I make these Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Spicy Baked Sweet Potato Fries all the time, and my family LOVES them. I recently made Air Fryer chicken wings for dinner, and these Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries were the perfect side dish! The Air Fryer makes the outside so crispy, while the inside is perfectly fluffy.

What I love most about this recipe is that it’s healthy and nutritious but loaded with flavor! Plus, they’re naturally gluten-free and use much less oil than deep frying. You can pair sweet potato fries with so many recipes and they’re always a hit!
How To Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Ingredients
- Sweet potatoes — I use 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes, which make about 4 servings.
- Olive oil — A little bit of oil will help the seasonings stick and give a nice crispy texture. I prefer to use olive oil but feel free to use any neutral cooking oil like avocado oil or canola oil too.
- Seasonings — I like to keep the seasonings simple, with just garlic powder, paprika, and a little salt and black pepper to taste.

Instructions
- Preheat your air fryer to 380°F if your model requires you to do so.
Prep the sweet potatoes:
- Peel and clean the sweet potatoes well.
- Then, slice them into uniform sticks ¼ inch thick. Trim off the thin ends on the sides, as they’ll be smaller than the rest of the sticks.

Coat with seasonings:
- Place the sweet potato sticks in a large mixing bowl. Then, toss with olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.

Air fry in batches:
- Arrange the sweet potato fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook until they’re crispy. I recommend 10-12 minutes, turning or shaking the basket halfway through to help them cook evenly.
- Note: Depending on the size of your air fryer, you’ll need to cook the fries in 2 or 3 batches. Be careful not to overcrowd the basket and leave a little bit of room for the air to circulate. You may also need to adjust the cooking time depending on your air fryer.

Serve and enjoy:
- Serve the sweet potato fries immediately, while they’re still hot.
- Sprinkle some salt and fresh parsley on top. Pair them with your favorite dipping sauce, like ketchup, mayonnaise, honey mustard or aioli, and enjoy!

Expert Tips
- Try to look for shorter sweet potatoes for your fries, so you can make the most of their length when you slice them.
- Cut the potatoes as evenly as you can, so they all cook at the same rate. I aim for a matchstick shape, about ¼ inch thick.
- After you wash the potatoes, I recommend patting them dry with a paper towel before you season them. This will help the olive oil and spices stick much better.
- Be careful not to overcrowd the air fryer basket. You want to arrange the sweet potato sticks in a single layer, so they’re not overlapping.
- For the best texture, I suggest flipping the sweet potato fries halfway through cooking. You can also give the basket a good shake to toss them around.
How To Store Leftovers
- To Store: We rarely have leftovers in my house! But, if you do, you can store the leftover sweet potato fries in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.
- To Freeze: Air fryer sweet potato fries hold up really well in the freezer! Once they’ve cooled, simply transfer them to a freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
- To Reheat: To keep the crispy texture, I like to reheat these in the air fryer or oven until they’re warmed through. I suggest keeping a close eye on them, as they don’t take long to heat. You can also warm them in the microwave, but they won’t be as crispy.

What To Serve with Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
- Air fryer mains: These are the perfect side for an air fryer main dish. I have been loving these air fryer lamb chops lately, but a classic chicken breast or salmon fillet are always good options!
- A juicy burger: What’s more classic than a burger and fries? I have lots of delicious and healthy burger recipes to try, like this low-carb bunless burger, or any of these 9 healthy veggie burger recipes. You can also serve it with delicious turkey burgers.
- Crispy chicken wings: Kinda like burgers, wings and fries are a classic comfort-food meal! For a healthier alternative to fried chicken wings, try these crispy baked wings or air fryer wings.
- A fresh salad: For a little balance, I also like to pair these with a fresh salad, like this protein-packed kale salad with crispy sweet potato.
Recipe Variations
- Make your own spice blend: Feel free to get creative with your spice cabinet and make your own seasoning blends. For ideas and inspiration, see my homemade BBQ and Cajun seasonings! You can also add a little of cayenne pepper to add some heat to your sweet potato fries.
- Add a touch of sweetness: Occasionally, I like to make a sweet variation of this recipe with a pinch of cinnamon and brown sugar. Pumpkin pie spice would also be delicious!
- Sweet potato cheese fries: To make these even more irresistible, I like to add freshly grated parmesan cheese on top while they’re still hot. It’s cozy, melty, and SO yummy!
Recommended Tools
- Air Fryer: Thanks to the air fryer, this recipe is quick, easy, and hands-off.
- Mixing Bowl: To season the fries, I like to toss them in a big mixing bowl. This way, all the fries will get an even coating of oil and spices.
- Sharp Knife: A large, sharp knife makes cutting the sweet potatoes much easier and safer.
Frequently Asked Questions
I prefer to peel the sweet potatoes, but this step is entirely up to you. If you choose to keep the skin on, be sure to scrub them very well to remove any dirt or debris.
When I cut sweet potato fries, I try to make them as uniform as I can, so they cook evenly. I cut them in half vertically first, then lay them cut-side down on a cutting board to keep them steady. Then, I’ll trim off the thin ends, (you can save these to use in another recipe) and cut the potatoes into sticks that are about ¼ inch thick.
In general, sweet potatoes are a great healthy food – they’re high in fiber, vitamin B-6, and potassium. But the air fryer is what makes this recipe healthier than regular fries! It uses way less oil, so these fries have fewer fat and calories than traditional deep-fried French fries.
No, soaking sweet potato fries is not necessary. Unlike russet potatoes, sweet potatoes are less starchy and don’t benefit from soaking to remove surface starch for a crisp texture. Soaking sweet potato fries may result in steam production in the air fryer.
